Digital cameras make working with video footage exceptionally easy nowadays. However, many professional cameras still record on MiniDV tapes and storing the footage in a digital format is not as straightforward as you'd like. If you have the means of connecting a DV camera or player to your computer, you can use Soft4Boost Video Capture to transfer the footage to your hard drive. It works with VHS and MiniDV tapes and it can also capture live footage from webcams. The captured footage can be stored in camera native format or in MPEG-2 format.

Soft4Boost Video Capture is free to try, without any significant functionality restrictions. The software itself doesn't require any special tools or services to run, but you will need the appropriate hardware to be able to capture video footage. Also, you don't need powerful hardware to run the software, but a more powerful machine will definitely make things go faster.

The user interface has a modern and sleek design and the layout of its controls is something you can get used to in no time. Video footage can be previewed on the right half of the window and preparations for the capturing process can be made on the left half, on three different tabs.

If you have a webcam connected to your computer, the software will show its live feed automatically, in the preview area. At this point, you can simply click a button, in the lower-left corner, to start capturing right away, but you will definitely want to see what Soft4Boost Video Capture has to offer in terms of configuration options, before capturing anything. You can quickly decide to store the footage in native YUY2 or BGR format, with different compression settings or in MPEG2, again, with different compression settings. You may also select an option to use a recommended format.

If you have other devices connected to your computer, you can go to the Settings tab and select a video input. You may also choose between different video standards audio inputs and formats, on the same tab. This is how you can transfer video footage from MiniDV tapes and camcorders or the home videos you have on those old VHS tapes.

Another interesting and useful feature is Video Capture's scheduler. The software can be set to split the captured video footage into separate files, based on a given duration or file size. Additionally, you can set it to stop the capturing process automatically, when the footage exceeds a set duration or file size. Disabling the screen saver and shutting down the computer or sending it to sleep mode are other settings you can make on the Scheduler tab.

Whether it's a home video or a professional recording, when it comes to capturing video footage, you can definitely rely on Soft4Boost Video Capture to get the job done.

Pros

You can capture video footage from VHS and MiniDV tapes, from webcams or from camcorders. Preparing the operation doesn't involve any complicated configurations. Thanks to the Scheduler feature, you don't have to stay in front of your computer while the program is running.

Cons

The possibility of selecting an interface skin from a list, instead of cycling between them, would make things a bit more comfortable.
